To receive a Smog Inspector certification you will need to take two classes:

Level 1 Inspector: Engine Control Fundamentals Training
Level 2 Inspector: Smog Check Procedures Training

Training specifics:

Training is 96 hours in length
12 weeks to complete evening classes

You have ASE A6 Electrical, A8 Engine performance, and L1 Advanced engine performance certifications.

You have an AS or AA degree or higher in Automotive Technology from a state an accredited or recognized college, Public school, Trade school, and have one year experience in automotive repair in the area of engine performance.

You have a certificate in Automotive Technology from a state-accredited or recognized college, school or trade school with a minimum of 720 hours of course work that includes at least 280 hours in the engine performance area, and have a minimum of 1-year of experience working in an automotive repair facility in the area of engine performance.

You qualify for Smog Inspector and Repair

Since you said yes to having met the requirements of having ASE and or formal education in Automotive Technology and have one year of experience as an automotive technician you only need one class to get both inspector and Repair licenses.

To receive both Smog Inspector and Repair certifications you will need to take one class:

Level 2 Smog Check Procedures Training

Training specifics:

Training is 28 hours in length
4 weeks to complete evening classes

You qualify for Smog Inspector and Repair

Since you said no you will need to take two classes and show proof to the BAR of having at least two years of experience as a technician in a licensed automotive repair dealer.

To receive both Smog Inspector and Repair certifications you will need to take two classes:

Level 2 Smog Check Procedures Training
Bar Specified Diagnostic Repair Training

Training is 100 hours in length
12 weeks to complete

The following information provides the requirements and process for obtaining a smog license presented in three options.

Note: Options 2 and 3 both require verifiable automotive experience in the areas of Engine Performance and Emissions where option 1 has no experience requirement unless the candidate wishes to skip the Level 1 Emission Control Training course.

SMOG INSPECTOR LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

Inspector license requirements are the following 2 classes:

1. Complete Engine and Emissions Control Training (Level 1) provided by BAR Certified Schools (required for candidates with minimal or no automotive experience, only experienced candidates that meet the requirements for option 2 can skip this course).

2. Complete BAR’S Smog Check Inspection Training (Level 2) provided by BAR certified school

3. Pass the state licensing examination

4. Renew license biannually with BAR update training

5. A student may skip the Level 1 if he possesses any of the requirements in OPTION 2

SMOG REPAIR TECHNICIAN LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

To obtain a Repair Technician License the candidate must:

1. Meet any one of the 4 qualifications:

A) Possess certification in the categories of Electrical/Electronic Systems (A6), Engine Performance (A8), Advanced Engine Performance Specialist (L1) from National Institute For Automotive Service Excellence (ASE): or

B) Possess An Associate of Arts or Associate Of Science Degree or higher in Automotive Technology from a state accredited or recognized college, Public School, or Trade School, and have one-year automotive repair experience in the Engine Performance area: or

C) Possess a Certificate in Automotive Technology from a state accredited or recognized college, school or Trade school with a minimum of 720 hours of course work that includes at least 280 hours in the Engine Performance area, and have one-year Automotive Experience in the engine performance area: or

D) Have a minimum of two years’ experience in the engine performance area, and successfully complete Bureau-Specified diagnostic and Repair Training provided by BAR certified school: And

2. Pass the state licensing examination

3. Renew license biannually with BAR update training

4. Bureau-Specified diagnostic and Repair Training Certification Is good for 5 years and must be maintained in order to keep a repair license current

SMOG TEST AND REPAIR TECHNICIAN LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

To obtain both “Inspector and Repair” license the candidate must check both boxes on the application for both inspector and repair and have the following qualifications.

1. Meet any one of the 4 qualifications:

A) Possess certification in the categories of Electrical /Electronic Systems (A6), Engine Performance (A8), Advanced Engine Performance Specialist (L1) from National Institute For Automotive Service Excellence (ASE): or

D) Have a minimum of two years’ experience in the engine performance area, and successfully complete Bureau-Specified diagnostic and Repair Training provided by a BAR certified School: And

2. Complete BAR’S Smog Check Inspection Training (Level 2) provided by BAR certified school

3. Pass the state licensing examinations in both inspector and repair to acquire both inspector and repair licenses

4. Renew license biannually with BAR update training

5. Bureau-Specified diagnostic and Repair Training and ASE certification Is good for 5 years and must be maintained in order to keep a repair license current
