Initial Inspector License:
This license permits individuals to inspect and certify vehicle emissions control systems participating in the Smog Check Program at licensed Smog Check Test-Only or Test-and-Repair stations. No prior experience is mandatory unless applicants opt to skip Inspector Level 1.
Licensure Requirements:
To qualify for the examination, applicants must meet one of the following three prerequisites:
1. Completion of Level I and Level II inspector training within the past two years.
2. ASE certification in A6, A8, L1, and Level II inspector training within the past two years.
3. Education/Experience:
- Possession of an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, or higher degree in Automotive Technology from a state-accredited or recognized institution, along with successfully completing BAR Level II inspector training.
- Possession of a certificate in automotive technology from a state-accredited or recognized college, public school, or trade school, which includes a minimum of 720 hours of coursework, with at least 280 hours dedicated to engine performance, and one year of automotive repair experience in the engine performance field. Also, BAR Level II inspector training was completed within the last two years.
- A minimum of two years of automotive repair experience in the engine performance area, along with successful completion of BAR-specified Diagnostic and Repair training within the past five years and successful completion of BAR Smog Check Training Level II inspector training within the last two years.
Initial Repair Technician License:
This license authorizes individuals to diagnose, adjust, and repair emissions control systems on vehicles participating in the Smog Check Program at licensed Smog Check Test-and-Repair or Repair-Only stations.
Licensure Requirements:
To qualify for the examination, applicants must meet either the Certification or Education/Experience prerequisites:
1. Certification: Applicants must currently hold certifications in ASE A6, A8, and L1.
2. Education/Experience:
- Possession of an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, or higher degree in Automotive Technology from a state-accredited or recognized institution. And one year of automotive repair experience in the engine performance field
- Possession of a certificate in automotive technology from a state-accredited or recognized college, public school, or trade school, with a minimum of 720 hours of coursework, including at least 280 hours of engine performance coursework and one year of automotive repair experience in the engine performance field.
- A minimum of two years of automotive repair experience in the engine performance area, coupled with completing BAR-specified Diagnostic and Repair training within the past five years.
