Technicians seeking to maintain a Smog Check Repair Technician license must ensure that their ASE A6, A8, and L1 certifications or BAR-Specified Diagnostic and Repair Training are current and that all required update training has been completed.

BAR-Specified Diagnostic and Repair Training is not a substitute for ASE certification; instead, it is an approved alternative pathway for license maintenance. As of August 2014, the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) no longer accepts a combination of ASE certifications and ASE Alternative certifications to satisfy renewal requirements.

The BAR-Specified Diagnostic and Repair Training program has replaced the former ASE Alternative program. Certification earned through this program is valid for five (5) years from the date of completion.
