BAR Specified Diagnostic and Repair Training aims to equip students with advanced skills in diagnosing and repairing Smog Check failures. This course emphasizes electrical/electronic systems and engine and emission control performance. Successful completion may qualify students with at least 2 years of experience in engine performance repair for the Smog Check Repair Technician License exam.
General Information
- Describe and demonstrate safety practices for personal, shop, equipment, and vehicles.
- Explain the causes and effects of automotive-related air pollution.
- Understand Smog Check licensure standards.
- Locate, assess, and apply vehicle service/repair information during Smog Check diagnosis and repair.
- Apply appropriate diagnostic and repair processes based on customer complaints, inspection failure causes, or vehicle data.
- Establish repair priorities for Smog Check failures using inspection and vehicle data.
Electrical/Electronic Systems
- Describe electrical and electronic principles.
- Define electrical terms like watts, voltage, current, and resistance.
- Identify automotive electrical circuit types.
- Understand various electrical and electronic components in computer-controlled automotive systems.
- Interpret electrical wiring diagrams for diagnosis.
- Use diagnostic equipment like a digital multimeter (DMM) and digital storage oscilloscope (DSO).
Engine and Emission Control Performance
- Describe engine theory, induction and exhaust systems, fuel systems, and ignition systems.
- Explain the theory, design, and operation of emission control systems.
- Identify exhaust byproducts and primary emissions.
- Understand air/fuel ratio and its relation to emissions.
- Analyze exhaust gas readings for diagnostic strategies.
- Utilize diagnostic equipment for engine and emission control system diagnosis.
- Identify underlying causes of malfunctions.
- Describe computerized engine and emission control management systems (OBDI and OBDII).
- Interpret OBDII data for diagnostics.
